Ponds, politics and the east: Stafford Beer's cybernetics — a wider view

Stafford Beer is remembered today for the Viable System Model and Team Syntegrity. But his cybernetics ranged much more widely, and in this chapter, I review some aspects of historical and contemporary significance that are in danger of being forgotten. I begin with Beer's technical contribution to the evolution of cybernetics, then turn to social and political dimensions of his work, and finally I point to the spirituality in which his work was embedded.
